How can you recognize a true pipe smoker?
Pipe smokers have a certain way about them, they are generally patient, calm, well-balanced people. Pipes are smoked for relaxation and enjoyment, when you smoke a pipe, you radiate peace.
Pipe smoking is a ritual. Filling the pipe is as much of an art as smoking it. Pipe smokers distance themselves from other forms of smoking. You don't inhale when you smoke a pipe, you gently puff at it, taste it on your tongue and set in motion your sense of taste.
Choosing a pipe
Pipes are made from all sorts of different materials including clay, porcelain, meerschaum and wood. Around 90 percent of the world's pipes are currently made of briar, a Mediterranean variety of heath. Its wood is second to none for making pipes, thanks to it's heat resistant properties.
The surface of the wooden bowl of the pipe may be polished or sandblasted. Polished pipes are made of the highest-quality blocks of briar, which expose the beautiful grain. Sandblasted pipes have a slightly rough texture. They are also called rustic pipes, as they have a slightly wrinkled surface from being worked over with a chisel.
Pipes come in all different shapes, from traditional to imaginative, which most of the times are very intricate work of arts.
A pipe smoker should own at least four pipes, since they have to cool down and rest after smoking to let the moisture evaporate. A single pipe shouldn't be smoked more than once a day.
You should choose your pipes to match your taste and lifestyle. A simple, classic pipe ideally matches suits, the average face and a slender figure. You may smoke a big pipe while watching television and a small pipe in theater foyers.
Once you've chosen a pipe, you need tobacco. You can buy all sorts of aromatic mixes, or even mix your own. Many flavors are available, including vanilla and fruit flavors, such as plum or cherry. You should also supply yourself with the proper tools for smoking. The basic folding pipe tool includes a scoop, a pick and a tamper-and don't forget the pipe cleaners.
