Titanium is a white metal and in jewelry it is used in almost its pure form (approximately 99% pure). Its natural color is gray and it is extremely durable. Titanium is also 100% hypoallergenic and very light. Jewelry fashioned with titanium feels much lighter than the one with gold or platinum. Titanium has a unique property which allows it to be colored to bright colors such as blue, purple and black.
From the jeweler's perspective, titanium unlike other metals like silver, gold, or platinum, is a very difficult metal to work with. Titanium's extreme hardness wears down jewelry making tools very quickly. Another unfavorable feature from the jeweler's point of view is that Titanium cannot be soldered, thus many traditional methods can not be used when working with this metal.
In general Titanium is less expensive than 9 karat white gold. However, because titanium is difficult to work with, the labor cost alone can make the price of a titanium jewelry a little higher. |
